At last May's Nunhead Cemetery Open Day I filmed some green wood demonstrators and am now selecting some excerpts to describe and work on. This forms part of a piece of writing, "working and making in action" in which I aim to place my own story of making within the present craft revival , using some analytic approaches learned from previous academic study.
For example, I've noticed that passers by are keen to show involvement in the demonstration by displaying their interest and positive assessment. These moves are more than just delicately placed according to the nature of the demonstrations: they jointly make the events. Jane Becker's "Selling Tradition" - about the ideology of the craft revival in Appalachian communities - can provide some useful analogies for working out what is going on in the demonstrations, which are performances and events in the own right.
